Reflecting on ANZAC Day: The Role of Army Cadets in Commemoration

ANZAC Day is not just a date on the calendar; it is a day imbued with deep national significance, commemorating the sacrifices of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during World War I and in conflicts since.

As the ADF Liaison Officer to the 24 BN and a Defence Adult Helper at the 224 Army Cadet Unit, I have the unique privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound impact of ANZAC Day on our young cadets.

The Essence of ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day, observed on the 25th of April, is a solemn reminder of the courage, mateship, and resilience demonstrated by the ANZACs at Gallipoli and in subsequent battles. It’s a day to honour the legacy of those who have served and to reflect on the values they embodied.

Cadets’ Participation in ANZAC Day

Each year, our cadets at the 224 Army Cadet Unit actively participate in ANZAC Day ceremonies and marches in Canberra. This involvement is more than a ceremonial duty; it is an opportunity for our cadets to engage with our nation’s history, to understand the sacrifices made for our freedom, and to develop a personal connection to the ANZAC spirit.

A Learning Experience

For many cadets, ANZAC Day is a poignant learning experience. Through participation in dawn services, wreath-laying ceremonies, and the ANZAC Day march, they gain a deeper understanding of the significance of this day. It is an occasion for them to stand shoulder to shoulder with veterans, serving members, and the broader community in a shared act of remembrance.

Impact on Cadets

The impact of these experiences on our cadets is profound. It instils a sense of pride, respect, and a deeper appreciation of the values that underpin the Australian Defence Force and our society. As a DAH, seeing the cadets’ growth in understanding and their respectful participation is both rewarding and affirming.

In the 224 Army Cadet Unit, ANZAC Day is a cornerstone event that embodies our commitment to honouring Australia’s military heritage. For us, it reinforces the importance of service, the value of history, and the responsibilities we bear in carrying forward the ANZAC legacy.

Lest We Forget.
