Stepping Stones to Leadership: Inside the Lance Corporal Course
As an Army Cadet staff member, one of the most rewarding things I get to witness is the transformation of our cadets into confident and capable leaders. The Lance Corporal course is often their first step on this journey, and it's always a powerful experience to facilitate.
As an Army Cadet staff member, one of the most rewarding things I get to witness is the transformation of our cadets into confident and capable leaders. The Lance Corporal course is often their first step on this journey, and it’s always a powerful experience to facilitate. If you’ve got a cadet interested in building their leadership skills, here’s what they can expect on this foundational course.

The Building Blocks of Leadership
The Lance Corporal course isn’t about turning cadets into drill sergeants! Instead, it’s focused on developing the core skills they’ll need as they progress through the ranks and take on more responsibility within their unit. Here’s a breakdown of some key areas we cover:
- Teamwork: The Heart of It All: Cadets don’t lead in isolation. We run activities and challenges designed to help them understand team dynamics, learn how to motivate others and practice working together to achieve a common goal.
- Communication is Key: Learning to give clear instructions, listen actively, and provide constructive feedback are all essential for effective leadership. Cadets practice these skills through role-plays, presentations, and leadership exercises.
- Responsibility: Rising to the Challenge: Lance Corporals take on more responsibility for themselves and their peers. The course emphasises the importance of accountability, making sound decisions, and leading by example.

Beyond the Classroom
While we do cover some theory, the Lance Corporal course is also hands-on. Cadets are given the opportunity to practice their new skills in a supportive environment, whether that’s leading a small team through an obstacle course, instructing a basic drill lesson, or organising a group activity. We provide feedback and guidance, helping them grow from these experiences.

Why It Matters
The Lance Corporal course is more than just earning a new rank badge. Here’s why it’s such a valuable step:
- Confidence Boost: Completing the course gives cadets a sense of accomplishment and boosts their belief in their abilities.
- Stepping Stone: The skills learned lay the foundation for future leadership roles, from Section Commander to higher ranks.
- Empowerment: We encourage cadets to find their own leadership style and discover what kind of leader they want to be.
Watching Them Shine
The best part of facilitating the Lance Corporal course is seeing the change in the cadets throughout the day. They arrive hesitant and leave, standing a little taller, ready to embrace new challenges within our unit. If you have a cadet motivated to grow, the Lance Corporal course is a fantastic opportunity for them to begin their leadership journey.
